Fat Blokes In A Capri
Thanks to the vagaries of the UK racing calendar, it’s British
GTs at Rockingham this weekend, and the BTCC at Snetterton.
The BTCC meeting will see none other than John Hindhaugh
making his GT racing debut – with Mike Youles, in a three
litre Capri, in the Heritage GT series.
“The combined weight of the drivers is over
200kgs - thankfully we are not both in there at once!” says
fat bloke from the North East. “It’s one of the few
UK circuits I have not even driven a road car around!” But
at least he’s got the vastly experienced Mike Youles to show
him the way round.
They’ve got two races at Snetterton, one on
Saturday and one on Sunday, and both will be shown on Motors TV
on Sunday, on Sky Channel 413.
The Capri is a late ‘70s model prepared to
Group 1 specifications, and is backed by ODL.
The last time Mike Youles raced a Capri was in the WiIlhire at Snetterton
in the mid ‘80s.
“The last time I drove a Capri was when I
owned a 2.0 S, while I was still living in the North-East,”
says the GlobeCast / ALMS commentator. “I attended my first
British GP with that car in 1990 - the drive back was memorable
as Joe Bradley and I had to drop off a Scottish friend at Jedburgh.
However the most abiding memory I have of that car is having two
accidents in it in the space of about 10 days... both involved not
being able get the damn thing stopped. Mike has assured me that
the race car has four-pot calipers and vented discs.... we'll see.”
