BTCS 12 Hours - Race Report

(apologies for the lack of service during the last 24 hours)

It wasn’t a classic, this year’s edition of the Spa 12 hours, but it certainly wasn’t a bad race. The motto of the event was without any doubt: to finish first, first you have to finish. Once the first half of the race was over, three teams remained at front and had a fair battle until the end; one GT (the GPR Porsche of Goossens / Duez / Van De Wauwer) and two silhouettes (the Euromaster BMW Silhouette of Slaus / Lupant / Palttala and the Jaguar X-Type of Thiry / Deman / Corthals). The latter finally won, but all three deserved victory.

The Brits spiced up the race, with a very fast Greensall (right) in one Chad Porsche and a superb GTS BMW E46 GTR, but it was the second of the Chad Porsches saving the honours, with a strong fifth overall for Hartshorne / James / Allen.

During the opening stages there were problems for almost every top car. The first to hit one was the van de Poele Jaguar. While the Jaguar was chasing a pair of Renault Méganes, both running strong and leading the race, the Jaguar dropped back with electrical gremlins. After three hours (half points), we had a 1-3 for Renault with the Slaus BMW in the middle. But not for long, as ignition problems caused long delays for both the Méganes.

Asking Fred Bouvy, the official Renault driver for a reaction, produced a very unwelcome response…

Another team suffering a lot during the opening stages was KS-Motorsport. The championship leading #21 BMW started carefully, but Vanbellingen / Fumal / Coens lost about 15 laps when the collector of the exhaust broke. The #22 sister car suffered serious clutch problems. Both cars had a stunning second half of the race and finished 7th and 9th and saved their championship hopes.

This scenario was also a perfect one for smaller teams to shine. First Motorsport, Chad (above), NGT and even the little JM VW Golf made their way into the top-10. At the front, clutch problems for the Goossens Porsche (below, #55) – Marc again was stunning, as was Palttala in the BMW - and brake troubles for the BMW resulted in a win for the Jaguar team. The MI crew had already won in 2003 and deserved this second victory.
