Int’l GT Open Report – Monza, Race 1
The new series got off to a flying start at Monza on Saturday (April 1) – as did (Lister prototype drivers) Andrea Belicchi and Stefano Zonca, and their GT3 Viper.

In a wet opening race, supporting the WTCC (so no Monza ban for the new series), the Racing Box Vipers finished 1-2 – ahead of a fleet of supposedly faster cars.

The Mosler MT900R of Lucas Guerrero and José Manuel Pérez Aicart came home third, ahead of the early leader, the Playtime Sara Free Ferrari F430 GTC (a GT2 / GTB car) of Alessandro Pier Guidi / Michele Bartyan and the Marcos LM600 of Cor Euser / Miguel Cristovão.

Alessandro Pier Guidi set the pole time, a 1.52.079, only one tenth ahead of the Edil Cris Ferrari 360 Modena of Paolo Ruberti. Two other Ferrari 360s, those of Monti and Sundberg, were sharing the second row, ahead of the first Viper of Cioci, the Marcos of Euser and the first of the Porsches, driven by Wolfgang Kaufmann. There’s certainly no shortage of talent in this new series.

Or unusual / exciting cars. The SEAT Cupra GTs made their debut – at least their debut with Lamborghini V10 power (from the Gallardo).

There was trouble for the (actual) Gallardo entries though – too noisy, for Monza, and eliminated from the meeting.

Race 1
Heavy rain fell just before the start, and Pier Giudi and Ruberti began a tussle for the lead, followed by Euser, Kaufmann, Zonca and Cioci.

But the Vipers were on the move, Zonca and Cioci second and third by lap 8, less than five seconds behind the leadng F430 GTC.

Spins were many, Groppi, Kaufmann, Giannocaro and Zonca having moments on the wet track, while the SEATs of Gião and Ligonnet managed to hit each other – albeit gently.

Perazzini initially passed Andrea Belicchi after the stops (the latter had lost a window from his Viper), and then took the lead from the F430 GTC of Bartyan – but Belicchi was on a charge and he took the lead, and the win, from the sister Viper, at the first chicane.

The final laps saw an exciting dice for second between Perazzini, Pérez Aicart in the Mosler and Euser, the Spnish MT900R taking the final podium spot – with Bartyan ahead of Euser.

Stefano Zonca: “It has been a very nice experience, and a wonderful race. The car was just perfect and it was not too difficult in the rain”.

Andrea Belicchi: “Stefano has done a very good job and I just had to finish it. The only concern was in the final laps, with the gearbox, and I ended without the second gear.”

These two head for Istanbul next, after Sunday’s race 2, for the opening round of the Le Mans Series. No wonder the Italian GT Championship got off to such a limp beginning last week (barely a dozen entries).

NB. Sunday's action-packed race 2 was won by the Sara Free F430 GTC, but it was led by the Mosler of Guerrero early on - and covered live on Eurosport.
