6 Hours of Vallelunga Reports – November 12-13

“Gold Cup”: No Win For Lister
Second For The Black Hybrid
Overall For Maserati’s MC12
Class Win For Masarati & Trackspeed
13th For Maceratesi !

With all due respect for the performance of the Megadrive crew and their Maserati MC12, the story of the Vallelunga “Gold Cup” was the way Lister Racing lost a win that had seemed secure throughout the race. With 30 minutes to go in the 6 hour race, the black LMP1 Hybrid, with drivers Stefano Zonca and Andrea Belicchi, had an advantage of 3 laps over the Maserati (Davide Mastracci / Leonardo Maddalena / Michele Serafini); at the flag, this had turned into a 15 lap deficit as the prototype had effectively dropped out of the running with a suspension failure at the new Curva Campagnano, with half an hour left.

In third place, it was another podium finish for the trusty Chrysler Viper GTS-R, with not-so-trusty tyres this time. Team Racing Box drivers Andrea Ceccato, Gabriele Sabatini and Marco Spinelli had to visit the pits with blown tyres all too often; in view of these tyre problens, they chose not to take the chance of a last-minute charge for second place – so the Lister was classified second. On its first scheduled stop, the Viper crew set the car down on the tarmac without any wheels in place – in all, it was better not to take any unnecessary chances on this day. During the fifth hour of racing, the Lister LMP and the Viper almost had an encounter of the expensive kind, when another tyre failure threw the American reptile into a spin right in front of the oncoming prototype. Both survived this incident, the Lister had its own share of bad luck some 60 minutes later. It did set by far the fastest lap of the race, a 1:29.515 by Andrea Belicchi.

The LMES race at Istanbul had its effect on the entry, and only 18 cars lined up to take the start; since this field was split up into no less than ten categories, almost every team was guaranteed one trophy or another, provided it got to the end. The CN4 class for smaller prototypes from the Italian championship was the only category with more than three entries; ironically, three of the four cars running here did not finish. One of them was the first car to crash out of the event, as early as lap 8. The Lister was slow to get away from the line, and work its way back to P1 the hard way. At the end of the first hour, Stefano Zonca had already put a lap on everybody else, and the British team stayed in front until disaster struck so close to the finish.

Piers Masarati and the Trackspeed team duly took their first class win “for the team and for me as a their driver / team manager,” said an overjoyed Masarati. “We lost the other car, which Paul Cope had started, after a driveshaft failure pitched Rory Fordyce into the wall in the second hour.

“But the yellow car ran faultlessly apart from having to replace a caliper, which cost us three laps. Ryan Hooker started the race, and he and David Ashburn both drove two stints, while I just did the middle stint. Ryan was fantastic, quick and consistent throughout, while David was amazing – it was 26 degrees, but he just charged on, in his open face helmet, and also did a great job.

“And we took home the biggest trophies you’ve ever seen!”

Masarati reckoned that Avon has “made a big step forward with the tyres, thanks to a stiffer sidewall since we last tested them. We couldn’t have double stinted them, but they lasted well for 80 minutes in the heat.”

With the Lister’s misfortune, Stefano Zonca’s quest to repeat his double victory in both races last year was over. In the Silver Cup for touringcars on Sunday, he shared a BMW M3 with Joe Macari and Adrian Newey.

“Silver Cup”
BMW 1-2-3

Not just an excellent engineer, Adrian Newey knows a bit about driving racecars, too. He gave a display of his craft in the #2 BMW M3 of Duller Motorsport, defending champions in this event. The Red Bull-backed #1 car of Dieter Quester / Philipp Peter / Luca Riccitelli was in command throughout the practice and qualifying sessions on the newly extended Vallelunga track: Quester and Riccitelli were out to continue a winning streak here that began in 2003.

With #1 on pole position, and #2 lined up alongside, the Austrian team took the start at the head of the 40 car field, and stayed there till the end.

During the first of several Safety Car periods for incidents on the track, Macari was passed by some competitors unfamiliar with the rule that says “no overtaking under yellow”; this was rectified by the officials. 80 minutes into the race, BMW #1 made an unscheduled stop with a blown tyre, and briefly lost the lead.

Driving the middle stint, Newey stayed behind the wheel of #2 for over two hours, and delivered a faultless performance. The old order between the two Duller cars was soon restored as the two teams ran slightly different fuel strategies. This meant that during the final stint, Philipp Peter kept one eye on the fuel gauge as the team was unsure whether he would have to come in for a late splash & dash. He made it to the flag, and the charging Stefano Zonca (with Newey and Macari, below) had to be content with second place, by some 24.4 seconds.

The fight for third place was decided during the final 30 minutes, Peroni / Argenti / d’Amico / Mezzasalma in the BMW M3 CSL eventually completed the podium, another BMW clean sweep. 29 of the 40 starters got to the finish.

For 2006, the organisers have announced their plan to run a longer Gold Cup, under the new name of “24 Hore di Roma” – which will ideally not clash with another prototype race, and thus see the entry it deserves. The Silver Cup will remain a six hour race.
