Spanish GT Preview – Barcelona
Heading For The Climax

dailysportscar.comBarcelona will host the last round of the Spanish GT Championship this weekend – and this becomes the most important event of the Spanish endurance season. The top-level Catalunyan Circuit of Montmélo will be invaded by a lot of foreign teams for the championship decider.

As is usually the case, the last race of the GT Sport season will be an endurance event of two hours (or 60 laps), not two legs of 50 minutes.

Who are going to be the champions? Balfe Motorsport or Meycom Sport? The British team is the favourite but the Meycom guys knows the track very well. In last year’s race, Shaun Balfe’s Mosler was second, just behind Paul Belmondo Racing’s Chrysler Viper, and Meycom’s Marcos LM 600 did not finish. The Spanish Marcos is faster, but the British Mosler is typically more reliable. After the Jerez de la Frontera meeting Shaun Balfe / Nigel Taylor (Mosler MT900R) are nine points ahead of Miguel Ángel de Castro / Ángel Burgueño (Marcos LM 600). Anything and everything can happen!

“It’s great to be in with a chance to lift the overall Spanish title, but we didn’t set out to win the title or expect to be in this position when we started the season,” admitted a modest Shaun Balfe. He was team managing at this track last year, so will be learning the circuit in testing today (November 11).

However, the race winner could be other than the two big championship entries. The French team MTO Mirabeau will enter four Chrysler Viper GTS-Rs and Darro Motor Sport will run the SEAT Cupra GT, with SEAT Touring car ace Jordi Géne at the wheel. SEAT has been disappointed with results this year, and the Cupra needs a good result at Barcelona to continue the car’s development.

The entry for JWA Automotive indicates a Porsche entered by James Watt Avila, a car we spotted testing in France in February - news item here - to be driven by Paul Daniels and Rob Croydon. "Rob and myself shared the same car at the last Spa Belcar round," says Paul Daniels."It's his first visit to Barcelona but the experience should be of benefit for the Bahrain GT event in which he will race a Tech 9 porsche." Daniels himself has raced at Barcelona in the FIA SCC. This weekend's race is "a toe in the water exercise prior to firming up our plans for next year."

In the GTB class, the championship is still open too. Luis Pérez Sala and Manel Cerqueda (Ferrari 360 Modena Challenge) arrive in Barcelona just four points ahead of Vicente Saez Merino (Ferrari 360 Modena Challenge). But they are not alone, because Santiago Puig (Ferrari 360 Modena Challenge) and the Portuguese ASM Team line up (Pedro Bastos and Armando Paes - Porsche 996 GT3 Cup) could still finish in first position in this category.

In the GTC class, Ángel Banús (Audi TT) has a six points advantage over Francesc Robert (Porsche 996 Cup) but everything can happen here too.
