Supercars Series – Mugello, July 11
The first round of the new Supercars Series provided a good battle between the six ‘muscle cars’ that were ready to take to the grid on Sunday afternoon at Mugello – writes Gabriele Tosi.

dailysportscar.comA 35 minute race produced a victory for the pole man (and local man) Gianluigi Picchi in his BMW M5 prepared by the Vaccari team, while second went to Franceasco Ascani and third to Riccardo Cinti (all BMW M5s).

From the start Picchi and Cinti engaged in a good scrap that lasted almost until the end of the race, with overtaking moves and some grassy moments for both of the drivers. Only in last part of the race did Cinti have to ease off, allowing Ascani to taking second spot.

In fourth place was the ex-Supertouring driver Mauro Simoncini, with some damage to his front spoiler, then in fifth spot was the beautiful Jaguar S-Type (painted with a pink livery in honour of the driver…) of the only lady (for now) present, Alexandra Gallo (her team solved most of the electric problems which developed during the weekend). Sixth and last place went to the other Jaguar of Fulvio Cavicchi (son of the chief editor of SportAutoMoto), one lap down.

Best lap went to Picchi in 2’13.104…while the best of the CIP cars in race conditions set a 1’49.600…so plenty work still to do.

The next round is at Imola on August 1, still supporting the Italian prototypes. The series should turn out to be a very good one, once a larger grid has been assembled, which should be the case by the end of season race at Monza.
