Mugello Today – CIP & Superstars Series
The fourth round of the Italian prototype series (in reality the third one, thanks to the ‘mess’ and the subsequent cancellation of the Pergusa round) takes place at the wonderful Mugello circuit in the Tuscany hills this weekend – writes Gabriele Tosi.

An impressive 33 cars ran in free practice today, with BMW-powered prototypes dominating: Uboldi, Francisci and Serafini in the top three places. It was a little disappointing not to find the SR2 machines up in the first 10 places, on a track suited to the bigger ex-FIA SCC cars.

Also at Mugello today were the first tentaive steps for the Superstars Series, Maurizio Flammini’s new creation, for 4-door saloon cars with 400 bhp – front, rear or all wheel drive allowed, manual or sequential gearboxes, but absolutely no help from driving aids.

Only seven cars were present, and only four of them took to the track for the first free practice, with the BMW M5 of Gialuigi Picchi turning the best lap, and behind him another BMW driven by Riccardo Cinti then Simoncini and Ascani (BMWs again.

The Jaguar S-Type of the only lady present, Alexandra Gallo, had some electrical problems and the Jaguar of Fulvio Cavicchi did not take to the track either.

Tomorrow morning is the qualifying session, then the race late during the afternoon - a sprint of 35 minutes.
