Spanish GTs – Estoril Preview
At the moment, Portugal is the official ‘world centre of football’, but this weekend it will host one of its most important motorsport events of the year – the Spanish GT Championship round at Estoril – writes Sergio Fonseca.

dailysportscar.comMiguel Angel De Castro and Angel Burgueño will defend first position in the championship, but the challengers are looking threatening. This Spanish pair is ahead.. but the British Mosler is the big fear of Meycom boys - because Darro Motor Sport’s SEAT Toledo GT will not be driven by ETCC Spanish star Jordi Gene. The Catalan is headed for Donington Park and Ignacio Bulto has no experience at the wheel of the SEAT.

This is the most important weekend of the year for Portuguese teams. ASM Team Porsche and the Mello Breyners Porsche will play at home so they have reasons to be very confident. António Nogueira’s Porsche 911 GT2 will help the Portuguese cause.

We have some news in the field. The big surprise is the absence of the SEAT Cupra GT. At Estoril, Adrian Campos was going to replace Moto GP team owner Joan Aspar at the wheel of the only SEAT Cupra GT racing so far, but without any reason the latest ‘son’ of SEAT Sport wont go to Portugal. Another change in the SEAT field: Team Elias has left the other SEAT Toledo GT to Saturn again.

Yellow Racing Team has left the championship, but Mastercar will replace Clay Regazzoni's team at Estoril. The French Opel Astra Silhoutte will miss the race too. The car was disappointing at Albacete and Jarama so the French team decided to skip the Estoril round.

The GTB Class will be another battle between Spanish Ferrari 360 Challenge and Portuguese Porsche 996 Cup cars, and the "old lady" Marcos Mantis will be the referee.

There is no significant news in the GTC category. One more car is added to the entry list: Scuderia Sol y Nieve (Sun & Snow Team in English) will enter an old Ferrari 355 Challenge.

Very close racing in prospect...
