Italian GT Championship – Rounds 3 & 4 – Magione
21 cars arrived for the two events at Magione, and qualifying went the way of the Lister of Zonca / Lancellotti for race 1 and the Ferrari 550 of Guagliardo / Casè for race 2.

Race 1
This one was decided at the Lister’s pit stop, when the starter failed to kick into life: until then Lancellotti had eased away from the start and had a solid lead, but sadly at the pit-stop the car’s comfortable margin evaporated – although the Storm was still classified.

At the start Lancellotti took the lead in front of Matteuzzi (Viper), Mastracci (Viper) and, as expected, the excellent Riccitelli - with his new co-driver Andrea Piccini. Already out was the JMB 550 of Casè after an off-excursion, stuck in the sand. Spinelli (Viper) made an excellent fight back through the field after starting at the back of the grid, getting up to P7 …only to join the 550 and the Lister in the retirement list on lap 19th due to a clutch failure.

In N-GT, with the ‘stellar’ Riccitelli mixing it with the big guys (partly due to his right foot, but also the slow and twisty track), behind the Ebimotors 911 was Galimberti (RS) in seventh overall, Berton (360 Modena) tenth overall, while the N-GT Championship leader Chiesa hadn’t had the best weekend so far but was charging back up to eleventh place. In the second part of the race Galimberti was out due to a radiator broken (thanks to too much exuberant driving).

In the lead Lancellotti was still in front, easing away from Mastracci who passed Matteuzzi, fourth was Cioci (Viper) then the “alien” Riccitelli followed by “Base Up” (Viper), Berton and Chiesa.

At the pit stop it was all change: the Lister had Zonca desperately trying to restart the V12 but nothing happened, so a sad retirement for the black beauty, so Bonaldi took over from Mastracci and was now in the lead…only to receive a stop and go for “too much aggressive conduct” when his team mate Mastracci passed Matteuzzi.

So Perazzini (taking over from Matteuzzi) now led, again, and pretty much nothing changed until the end, when he passed the followed by “the co-alien” Piccini (1st in N-GT of course) and Baso (Cioci’s team mate). It was fourth overall for Bonaldi then Francescon / (Berton), Kessel / (Chiesa) and Drudi.

In the GT3 class, finally a win for the new Maserati Light of Cipolli / Corradi.

Race 2
Race two began with a bang, at the exit of the first curve, for the race 1 winner Perazzini, who contacted another car, spun, restarted in last place and began a charge back through the field.

The lead was taken by Moccia (RSR) followed by Zonca and Kessel, so a very chaotic start, with a 996 in front of the “big boys”, while Casè slipped back to fourteenth in this 550, owing to a spin in turn two: not the best weekend for the JMB 550, but Casè was a demon and continuing from way back was very fast indeed.

In the lead, Moccia didn’t have the power to keep an aggressive Zonca behind him, so the Lister led …only to lose it after a slight error: Pigoli (Galimberti’s team mate) Kessel, Piccini and Bonaldi passed Zonzca, but the latter was “hot” and re-passed Bonaldi and Kessel, moving up to third. Things calmed down until the pit-stop when the Lister guys made an excellent stop, getting the car out in the lead, in front of Galimberti and Guagliardo. Riccitelli lost a bit of time in the pit and was fourth, in front of Mastracci, Chiesa and Spinelli.

So an easy Lister win?… Well no, because on his third lap Lancellotti entered the pit lane for a problem in the steering compartment, probably thanks to the very high kerbs at Magione.

In the race for the win, Guagliardo had an easy time of it and went on to take the flag first, in front of the RSR of Riccitelli and Mastracci’s Viper, while in N-GT second place went to Kessel / Chiesa followed by Pigoli / Galimberti.

In the GT3 class the win went to the quickest pair Sada / Sala (996 Cup) in front of the Maserati of Cipolli / Corradi who had a very good weekend, in a car in the very early stages of the development process.

Next stop is the Mugello circuit: expect the big boys to see off the N-GTs with fewer problems.
