FFSA GT - Nogaro – Race 1
With Vipers filling ten of the top eleven finishing positions in Sunday’s race, the victory in the opening race of the season went to Olivier Thévenin and Patrick Bornhauser in the VBM GTS-R. The men from Orléans finished ahead of Moureu / Cayrolle in the Mirabeau Viper and Dumez / Blanchemain in the Larbre car. The DDO Saleen was fourth.

Moulin-Traffort / Rabineau won the N-GT category, while Dedours / Makowiecki were winners in the French Cup.

Poleman Romain Bera started well, ahead of David Hallyday and Didier Moureu while in the N-GT category and in the French Cup, Thierry Rabineau and Arnaud Peyroles were leading. Very soon, Bera and Hallyday widened a gap on Moureu and Bornhauser who had just passed Géarard Bleynie, who had engine problems. The fight was rife between Bera and Hallyday, who were exchanging their positions many times, while Arnaud Peyroles, who was leading in the French Cup, had to pit with a rear left puncture, leaving the lead to Narac / David.

The positions were moving before the driver’s changes. Bera succeeded in passing Hallyday once and for all, and behind these two, Patrick Bornhauser was leading the hunt, followed by Olivier Dupard’s Prodrive Ferrari 550, in which he was more and more at ease, and Didier Moureu. The leader chose to stay out longest of all, before pitting for the driver change.

After the pit stops, Eric Cayrolle was ahead of Thévenin and Dumez, these two neck to neck. These two were having a tough but fair. Thévenin in the VBM Viper succeeded in containing Dumez who preferred to ease up, his tyres being worn following hard braking.

Little by little, Thévenin caught up to Cayrolle’s Mirabeau Viper, and the latter let him pass, sportingly, within ten minutes of the end. Behind the three leading men - Thévenin, Cayrolle and Dumez - Dominique Dupuy, at the wheel of his Saleen, was doing brilliantly, passing successively Sourd, who had a puncture soon after, Beltoise, Zangarelli and Besson, rushing up to fourth position. The end of the race was turning into a testing session for the Ferrari 550 Maranello, as an electrical problem seemed to engage the speed limiter, forcing the French champion, Goueslard, to return to the pits.

For their first race at the wheel of a Viper, Thévenin / Bornhauser won their second FFSA GT race, ahead of Moureu / Cayrolle and Dumez / Blanchemain. The N-GT category was won by Moullin-Traffort / Rabineau, who had brake problems during the whole race so that they had an off in the gravel trap in the last lap – but still won comfortably. Fred Dedours and Fred Makowiecki ceebrated their comeback in the French Cup with their win by several lengths ahead of Narac / David and Ancel / Goubet.

Race 2 is on Monday afternoon.

Olivier Thévenin: “We had already won here with the VBM in 2001 and to have a win for our first Viper race, it is fantastic. Patrick did a very good stint, catching the leader’s pace and saving our tyres. I had to contain Dumez early in my stint. I caught up to Cayrolle who sportingly let me pass at the School hairpin. The season will be very tough. We have to score points without being too hungry. We had
chosen a setup which allowed us to get the tyre wear under control. It will be the key this year: to find the right compromise to save the tyres.”

Éric Cayrolle: “When Thévenin caught me up, I didn’t risk anything, he was quicker. I succeeded then to stay behind him, but I couldn’t pass him. A second place is a good start, we’ll have to be regular throughout the season and, no doubt we’ll be able to be on the upper spot of the podium.”
