McNish – Silverstone – ORECA Audi R8 The wee Scot is going to have one more race in an Audi R8 – in the LMES Silverstone 1000 Km, on August 13, partnering Stephane Ortelli in the ORECA PlayStation example (the ‘Audi UK’ car).

McNish and Ortelli won the Le Mans 24 Hours together in 1998, and will form a formidable combination. Ortelli raced this car at Spa in April this year, and at Le Mans of course.

"I raced it (the R8) in its début season in 2000 and I'm delighted to be bringing my association with the Audi R8 to a close in Britain,” said McNish. “I've been given the chance by Audi Sport, Audi UK and Oreca to drive at Silverstone and it's too good an opportunity to miss."

Allan McNish has done remarkable things over the years in R8s – and his most recent win came in this very chassis, at Silverstone last year (right and below). Spa last September wasn’t the right way to end the ‘affair’, nor Sebring (second) or Le Mans (third) this year.

"Despite Audi ultimately claiming a 1-2-3 result at Silverstone (last year), we were not the outright fastest cars," explains the Scot. “I qualified over 2.3-secs off pole-position and was down almost a second on race pace, but this year will be even more difficult for us.”

That’s a reference to the lighter, more powerful hybrids – but they won’t have A. McNish at the wheel. Suddenly the Silverstone race becomes even more of an attraction, in just two weeks’ time. Hugues de Chaunac has chosen very wisely.
