2006 Teams Championships Clinched By Vitaphone Racing And AF Corse
tally of just 6 points at the Hungaroring was enough to finally
etch the Vitaphone Racing name on the Teams GT1 Championship for
the 2006 FIA GT Championship, clinching a double win for Vitaphone
in the Championship, after the team claimed the same title in 2005.
The pair of
Maserati MC 12 cars were weighed down with a total of 85 and 105
kg respectively, which left them somewhat off the ultimate pace
in Hungary, but despite this the team kept up their record of scoring
points in every round of the Championship thus far, with fifth and
seventh places at the Hungaroring helping the team on to an unassailable
total of 99 championship points.
Director Rafael Calafell: "We are really happy to win the FIA
GT Team Championship, it was a really hard season. We have to thank
everybody, all the team crew, the cars, the drivers… and to
congratulate them for their great job. Now we are concentrating
on the Drivers’ title, but it is going to be difficult. We
are very glad to have claimed this title, and now we will keep going
for the next target.”
The GT2 team title meanwhile was also settled tody with the AF Corse
squad showing even more consistency, both the #58 and #59 Ferrari
430s scoring points at every round.
The team's 122
points accumulated so far mean that their nearest rivals, Scuderia
Ecosse, are now too far behind to challenge for the 2006 title.
Along the way AF Corse have claimed three race wins, including a
near faultless run at the Proximus 24
Hours of Spa.
The drivers title too will now definitely fall to one or other
of the AF Corse squads, Bobbi
and Melo versus Aguas and Salo.
“It is definitely
a good day for the team, as we have won the FIA GT2 Team Championship
with this result,” Bobbi explained. “ AF Corse really
deserves this Championship title as they worked so well all year.
I just have to say thank you to AF Corse and to Pirelli, I’m
really glad to be here, and to be part of this kind of team. It
is also a pleasure to drive with Jaime.”
