Quick GT3s
We've had such a fraught month here, it's been tough to keep up with everything that's been going on - and the Dijon FIA GT media and test days, so soon after Istanbul, was one event too many.. but we're doing our best!

Toine Hezemans points out that "you mentioned that the Ferrari F430 GT2 car is very quick, which it is, but how about the new GT3 cars like Dodge Viper, our Corvette Z06, the Ascari and Porsche?

"They went only 1.5 seconds slower then the Ferrari and even quicker than some GT2 Porsches at Dijon - and all this on very hard control tires. Can you imagine how quick they would be on proper competition tires?"

So we're delighted to post these 'colour-coded' times (below) from Dijon: just the GT2s and GT3s - and there are the #26 Viper, the #3 Corvette Z06 and the Ascari, nestling in among the GT2s.

The Viper, in particular, was frighteningly fast at Ricard, in the previous equalisation test, but logically that was largely the influence of the long straight there - unless the FIA GT 'committee' has granted the Vipers additional penalties since then, which we don't think they have.

With the DAMAX Ascari a very competitive third quickest in GT3 this week, Aaron Scott is feeling confident - especially as Christophe Bouchut, one of the FIA's 'official testers' commented that the Ascari "has plenty of torque, and handles well - it's a good package, although the Porsches are quicker on the straight". Presumably the Vipers and Corvettes too - although top speeds haven't been made available.

"We'll be working on the set-up this year," says Aaron Scott (right - and at the wheel, below), "but we're happy with what we're starting with."

However the FIA arrives at its final conclusions, some tracks will inevitably suit some cars more than others. We'll see the first real test of the equalisation at Silverstone.

"But the FIA has done a really good job (with the equalisation," says Aaron Scott, "and it's going to be a bloody good championship: great variety and huge fields."

Toine Hezemans at Carsport agrees: "I am sure that there will be more than 45 cars on the grid at Silverstone, but probably 48 or even 50 cars. It is an incredible success story, because the cars are almost as fast as the GT2 cars and they cost half the price.

"But what is more important, is that the maintenance cost of these cars is not even half the price of a GT2 car. A driver who buys a car is spending 150,000 Euros for the complete season for two drivers - for which they will have a lot of fun and participate in big FIA events, and they can do some national championship races as well."

Just behind the fastest three marques at Dijon we have the Venturi, Aston Martin, Porsche, Lamborghini, Ferrari and Maserati - and at the moment, we just don't know how hard most of these cars were being driven. The whole picture will become clearer early next month, at Silverstone... when hopefully the Ascari will register the correct car number on the timing screens!
