Barwell Confirms GT3 Aston Martin Line-up
With updates already filed on the progress of DAMAX and Tech 9, for the FIA GT3 European Championship, it’s now the turn of the third, UK-based squad to confirm its driving squad.

Barwell Motorsport's trio of Aston Martin DBRS9s will contest the full, five race European series, together with selected British GT rounds. The final pieces in the jigsaw have been provided by Piers Johnson and Michael Bentwood, who will both have part-season campaigns.

Johnson (right) will join Martin Rich for the first three races in the European series and will join Leo Machitski for the Donington Park, two hour, British GT race.

Bentwood, who impressed last season aboard the RJN Nissan 350Z in British GT, will partner Tom Alexander at Donington and Snetterton (in British GTs), and at Dijon and Mugello in the FIA series, where he will replace Tiff Needell, who will contest the opening three rounds in the car.

Leo Machitski meanwhile will partner Jonathan Cocker for the full FIA series.

Piers Johnson is looking forward to his first opportunity to get behind the wheel of the DBRS9, which should come next week with a test in the Prodrive-run test car: "The team's third car arrives just before Silverstone, but I'm due to get some time out next week in the test car,” says Johnson. “I'm delighted with the drive, it's been a bit of a late decision but the grid looks very good indeed."

dsc believes that there is a decision still to be reached on whether the third car reaches the team by the end of April (in which case it would be fitted with the H-pattern gearshift currently featured aboard the test car) or alternatively whether the car is delivered rather closer to its opening race meeting at Silverstone, where tit would be fitted (as are the other five FIA GT3 cars) with a sequential shift.
