New British GT Team – Trackspeed
The 110 Club
The
2005 British GT Championship has attracted a number of new teams
to its ranks and these teams contain their fair share of characters.
Two of these interesting racers can be found at the Trackspeed pits,
home of the ‘110 Club’. “I’m 52 and David
is 58 and we’re laying claim to the title of ‘Oldest
Driver Pairing In The Championship,” explained Rory Fordyce
(right) with a smile.
A lawyer by profession,
Fordyce is returning to racing after a three year hiatus, having
previously raced Ferraris for almost 20 years. He has now joined
forces with former racing foe, David Ashburn. Entirely self-funded,
the team has a busy year ahead, not only running a Porsche in GT3,
but also running a brace in the Porsche Cup. All three are 2004
cars and were sourced from the German Porsche Cup.
So why two series and why BGT?
“We’re
getting old and if we don’t do it now, when else are we going
to do it?” said Ashburn, a Chelsea-based businessman. “The
length of the races (in BGT) was a major factor,” continued
Fordyce. “We were getting fed up with setting up for a whole
weekend and getting a 15-20 minute race out of it; you’ve
barely settled into a pace before the race is over. Mind you, I
once did a 40 minute race and it nearly killed me!”
“We’re looking
at the regs. to see if it’s okay to change drivers every 15
minutes,” joked Ashburn.
Fordyce and Ashburn will
be contesting the full season, subject to business commitments.
If they themselves cannot race, however, they will be looking to
put other drivers in the car.
These two may joke about
their age and physical condition, but it is obvious that they are
serious about their racing. They are here primarily to enjoy themselves
and are not looking to win the championship, but neither are they
here to tootle about at the back of the field.
The GT3 paddock
certainly looks like being a lively one this year.
