Konrad For ALMS?
Franz Konrad's team may again be the principle challenge to Corvette
Racing in the American Le Mans Series in 2006 – as it was
back in 2001-2. According to our source, the Konrad team will comprise
two Saleen S7Rs, one from Franz himself, and the second, though
it will be operated within the Konrad team, will be an entry from
Tom Weickardt, who has participated in the ALMS for many years with
his Viper. This approach of operating with a partner, within a two
car team, is one that Tom told dsc during the past season he would
prefer, even though it cannot be said to have been successful for
him in two previous instances.
GTS victory at Sebring in 2001 remains as one of the great achievements
(and upsets) in this class. Franz Konrad has concentrated on the
FIA GT Championship (and LMES, in 2004) since 2003.
We are also
advised that the GT2 F430 Ferraris seem very much certain for this
year, but that assumptions that there would be a Maserati MC12 in
the series may in the end be wrong. Dick Barbour was seen in Detroit
this week, ostensibly to talk with Aston Martin officials, but there
remains no reason to believe that his fund raising has gone from
zero to five-million in just three weeks. All that means is that
for now the only confirmed ALMS entries are the two Corvette C6.Rs.
