32nd ADAC Nürburgring 24 Hours – Race Report 4
BMW 1-2

So, where were we? We are all set for the Grand Finale here, so let's get to it. There are Porsches in 6th, 7th and 8th: #2 Alzen, #38 Basseng, #85 Raeder, the latter on the same lap - and all of them in the pits simultaneously, at twenty past noon. The #34 Captain Racing Cup Porsche has dropped to 10th. Behind them, Swedish team Podium Racing is set to mount a late challenge. This will be a "Podium finish", and a fine result for Lennart Pehrson, Ulf Karlsson, Koit Vertee, and Örnulf Wirdheim who is F3000 racer Björn Wirdheim's dad. Another driver's father in the race is racing against his own son: Markus Luhr is driving an older Porsche 964 Cup car here, and is currently in the high twenties. His boy, Lucas, is up there in third. "Best Porsche" honour still goes to Luhr & Co. in the # 46 Manthey-Racing 996GT3-MR; they have managed to shake off Audi #8 somewhat, and seem safe in 3rd. Timo Bernhard's late decision to go here instead of Le Mans may be rewarded with champagne.

Out in front, it is still the #42 Audi R8 . - pardon me, I was thinking "dominant" - .it is still the #42 BMW M3 GTR, now with almost two laps advantage over its sister car. Barring acts of fate, etc. etc.

Here's an act of fate, the engine detonates on the Alzen turbo Porsche at Klostertal, King Klaus Ludwig at the wheel. It will be an interesting de-briefing in the Jürgen Alzen Motorsport trailer in a couple of hours. Uwe Alzen: "We are disappointed, we fought our way up from 104th to sixth, now it looks like an oil line has broken". This brings the Basseng / Simon / Konrad / Franchitti car up to 6th. They are currently in the pits and will still have a fight on their hands, #85 is on the same lap, and catching up with the Falken Skyline which is now emanating puffs of smoke at every gearchange. The Falken Motorsport team has announced it intends to bring the Skyline back next year, for one VERY last time.

The dailysportscar Kiss of Death, pt.1: the aforementioned Podium Porsche 996 ends up in the guardrail at Wehrseifen. With its left front suspension bent, this car will probably go no further.

The dailysportscar Kiss of Death, pt.2: the #38 Land Motorsport 996 is stranded in the pits with a defective clutch. Perhaps it will go out for the last lap. Sorry Marino.

"This is so disappointing, the clutch is slipping all the time", says a visibly dejected Marino Franchitti, "we will try and get it out for the last lap but, and this is not related to the incident I had at night, I was sent out on intermediates, and I aquaplaned everywhere - I went so slow, everyone was passing me, Civics were passing me! Then I got a tap from somewhere and went over the kerb and into the wall, and damaged the rear end. But even with this, we were still in sixth place! This is so ******* disappointing." Nevertheless, well done Marino, a fine performance on his Nordschleife debut.

And the #79 Dören Porsche is out of the race as well, with a cracked radiator, and apparently a cooked engine as a result. The team says it will change engine and gearbox to bring the car over the line, in memory of Edgar.

AND the leader is being tended to in the BMW garage, the undertray comes off; but after a delay of only a few minutes, #42 goes back out, still with a lead of a whole lap over #43 which simultaneously receives regular service, Boris Said yields the controls to Pedro Lamy, and out she goes. Team Schnitzer just making absolutely sure everything is taken care off as the last lap of the 2004 Nürburgring 24 Hours approaches.

70 minutes to go, and Audi #8 is launching a last attack on the Manthey Porsche: 8:29:6.81 is the fastest lap of the race. The brothers Huisman may finish second (Duncan, BMW) and third (Patrick, Audi). And second-fastest lap from the #8 Audi, 8:31:1, they are going for 6th place.

Tired old #1, the Astra OPC with Reuter & Co., is back in the top 10. Only victory matters for the works teams, but Opel is doing this for the marque's many fans around the track. Tiemann is behind the wheel for the last hour. And clocks the second-fastest lap of the day!

With 60 minutes to go, it is a black day for Sweden as the Diners Club Saab grinds to a halt with a blown engine, belching flames and smoke. This car will go no further; they were in 16th place overall, and second in their class. Back on pit lane, the Falken Skyline receives a quick shine, polish, and manicure for the photo finish - and some engine oil. Roland Asch is getting in.

BMW #42 is negotiating the corners of the Nordschleife gingerly, staying away from the kerbs, avoiding the concrete slabs of the Karussell, and lining up with #43 for a photo finish.

Audi #7 in the pits, hectic activity seems to center around the left rear wheel. Their seventh place is secure. The car goes back out, but stays on the Grand Prix track and heads straight back in! Is their seventh place secure?? Apparently it is not - #7 goes into the garage.

They were nose to nose yesterday evening, now they are nose to tail, #42 and 43 carefully threading their way through the traffic of slower cars. The leader's last lap was in the high 23 minutes, will the next one be the last lap of the race?

30 minutes to go, and Opel #1 clocks a new fastest lap of the race. They are in a lonely ninth place but they will not give up all the limelight to BMW. Speaking of limelight, the sun is coming out. Headlights ablaze on Audi #8, this is a dejà-vu of last year when Marco Werner was in #8 and chased the leading Opel. But in 2004, #8 is in fourth place, and coming into the pits. Huisman remains in the car for the last stint - and meanwhile, a broken left rear suspension is detected on Audi #7. It ventures back out onto the track some ten minutes later.

The #38 Land Porsche is now down to 20th place. And the #79 Dören Porsche, with new flat six engine in place, is going back out for a sentimental last lap.

15 minutes to go, and Audi #8 is headed for assistance in the pits – the fourth-placed car! - and stops dead on pit entry! AND the #1 Opel is coasting along with a rear tyre in shreds, and going to pieces yet again! Meanwhile #8 has made it to the safety of its garage but what is the problem with this car? (nothing at all - they want to stage a photo finish. Phew.)

From a BMW 1800TISA in 1970 to a BMW M3 GTR in 2004, Hans Stuck refuses to celebrate victory before his car has crossed the line but he acknowledges that "everyone on the team has done a superb job, zero mistakes, that's how it shoud be". The Manthey Porsche has closed up to the BMWs, the first three cars will finish the race in close formation. Ten minutes to go, and they have slowed right down - this WILL be the final lap of the 2004 Nürburgring 24 Hours. But where is Opel #1?

dailysportscar.com

Four minutes to 15.00, and a train of cars assembles behind the three winning cars, among them the yellow Porsche of Markus Luhr, following his son Lucas to the finish. The #38 Land 996 has got going again, too. It is a triumphant parade down Döttinger Höhe, and as the clock ticks over to 1500 hours, the pack accelerates down the main straight for the last time, and they have done it. With their main opponents hitting trouble early on, their success did not come as a surprise, but they have earned it the hard way. And their names are Dirk Müller, Jörg Müller, Pedro Lamy, and Hans-Joachim Stuck.

There is Opel #1, classified in tenth place, and doing a series of donuts, just as in 2003. But this time it is not a gesture of triumph, but of acknowledgement for the fans. The sense of disappointment must be overwhelming within the Opel organisation. They will be eager to return to Green Hell next year to set the record straight.

Hans-Joachim Stuck: "I have driven a few but this was psychologically the hardest 24 hour race I have ever been in, because we were on the wrong tyres all the time! The weather meant we were riding on a razor all the time. But nevertheless, it was huge fun! I must say an special "well done" to our technicians. They gave us an M3 GTR that was perfect."

The modest Pedro Lamy: "Actually I finished second because I did not drive that (the #42) car, but the M3 GTR was fantastic."

Jörg Müller: "Every time I come back to the Nordschleife I really have to pull myself together, so I have every respect for these guys. The best race I have ever had, a dream! I'll drink to this tonight!"

Dirk Müller: "I'm just spuer happy! The last few laps I concentrated on making no mistake whatsoever. When I crossed that finish line I got goosebumps. I think this was the most powerful M3 BMW ever put together so, well done BMW! I must have aged by 100 years since yesterday."

Boris Said, the first American driver to get to the podium in a Nürburgring 24 Hour race: "It's cool I mean, this track. - I'd like to race here every week! I love it! The weather was so bad, I saw everything this weekend but the sun! BMW has put together such a good programme, it's like I always say, the M3 is the ultimate driving machine. Michelin makes
the best tyres in the world, my brother Hans has been such a good teacher for me, let's do this every week!"

Duncan Huisman: "Like Hans said, it was so tiring, I drove Spa in the rain last year, but I had one dry lap this whole week. It was incredible, really good fun - I think the M3 is the best car."

Lucas Luhr: "Without taking anything away from last year's winners, this was quite a bit tougher than last year. Physically, it was easy; but mentally, you always had to keep your focus, and with such bad visibility and the speed differences out there (between the various vehicles), it was a challenge!"

Timo Bernhard: "The BMW boys did a superb job, and I think we made the best of it. As Lucas said, 3rd place this year rates more highly than 3rd last year."

Arno Klasen, on the broken exhaust last night: "This was more than a little scare, it cost us 1.5 secs and so we couldn't attack the BMW, but it doesn't matter. Big thanks to Olaf, for giving us such a terrific car with his limited resources."

Olaf Manthey: "I had the problem that I couldn't get the same drivers as last year, I tried a few, such as Marc Duez, but in the end with some help from Porsche Timo could be back, I was just a reserve driver just in case someone fall ill, luckily this was not the case so I could work on our strategy from the pit wall. I've been involved in the sport for 30 years now, I like doing the pit wall job, it is even more of an adrenaline kick than driving yourself because you have no influence over what happens with the car, I enjoy it a lot."

And Charly Lamm: "....unbelievable. I don't know what to say, thanks to our drivers, it is magic to be here. I tell you, the 2003 situation weighed heavy on us, and then you come here, you give everything, but a 24 hour race isn't over till the end of the 24th hour! Drama can happen at the last minute as you could see with other teams. What can I say? It has been our dream, and it came true. Everything was perfect." And will they be back once more in 2005? "I can't say, but I'll try and get BMW to send us back here with the GTR." Whereupon he shared a bear hug with the equally emotional Hans Stuck. Next stop Spa-Francorchamps, and then - Bathurst?
