ALMS – Road America 500 – Race Morning
Pilbeam’s Last ALMS Race
Road America, Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, USA – Morning warm-up was largely uneventful, on a cool track and under overcast skies that will undoubtedly affect track temperature for today’s round seven of the American Le Mans Series. Carsport America’s Dodge Viper had a problem with the right front – the tire was rubbing, but they returned to the course and completed ten timed laps. Miracle Motorsport’s Courage C65 had a problem with loose bodywork; similar to yesterday’s during qualifying?

Team Bucknum Racing reported that they would not be running in the session, preferring to “save the car and engine for the race”. We talked to Bryan Willman, after hearing along the paddock from one of the ALMS forum participants (“JeffB”) that the team might replace the Pilbeam before Petit Le Mans. “I can tell you this. We will not race the Pilbeam again (after today),” said Willman, who will start the car here. “We will definitely be at Petit Le Mans with a different car, but it will not necessarily be the car with which we will start the 2005 season.” After deciding to “take your time” with the decision, what precipitated this? “Let me show you something”, said Bryan, and produced the left front suspension mount I am holding above the installed replacement in the photo. Notice the bolt holes torn away on the rear wishbone mount.

“That happened when we tried to take the kink flat,” said Willman. What’s the race strategy for today, then, Bryan? “I’m going to start at the back, drive as fast as I can, and come in for fuel when it gets low. If it rains we’ll have to come up with a plan quick.” Message for collectors from Mr. Willman: “Available, car with charisma and character and with a lot of the ‘spirit of racing’ in it.”

Chris Dyson will start the Dyson Racing Lola B01/60-AER. Correcting what we reported yesterday, AER tells us that the replacement engine in the #16 was in fact a fresh engine with zero miles on it. James Weaver was fastest in the warm up - although neither the #4 or #23 cars were fastest in their respective classes - and there's a 30% chance of rain.
